A residential roof can last for decades if it receives the proper care, but nothing lasts forever. Roofs are constantly being exposed to the elements, so they can take a serious beating over several years. If they take too much of a beating or too much wear and tear, they can collapse. Fortunately, you’ll likely notice signs of damage long before your roof collapses completely. This should give you time to contact a roofing professional to repair or replace your roof, but you still need to act fast. Here are just a few things to watch for in your own roof.
A Sagging Ceiling and Roof
If you want to get an idea of your roof’s overall health, take a look at your ceilings and your roof’s support structures. If they are sagging, there could be some damage that needs to be fixed. You can also take a look at your roof from outside of your home. A healthy roof should be straight with no missing shingles. If your roof is noticeably sagging or you don’t have all of your shingles anymore, it’s time to contact a roofer to make emergency repairs.
Cracks in the Masonry
If you have visible masonry on the outside of your home, check to see if there are any cracks. These are often signs that your roof is not in good shape. Granted, cracks can be caused by other things as well, but it’s always a good idea to contact a roofer if you see them near your roof.
Cracks In Your Walls
Cracks in your walls inside your home can also be a sign that your roof is headed for a collapse. These cracks form for the same reasons as the exterior cracks: your roof is swaying and bucking, and that is putting too much pressure on the rest of your home’s structure.
Leaks
Leaks are always a bad sign when it comes to your roof. At the very least, it means that you need to patch a hole in your roof before you incur serious water damage. At the worst, your roof’s structure is compromised enough that it could collapse sooner rather than later.
